CLIMATE ACTION

Climate

At Husika Alliance, we recognize the critical importance of environmental conservation in mitigating the adverse effects of climate change and industrialization. Our focus extends to the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) regions, where residents heavily depend on climate-sensitive sectors for their livelihoods. Unfortunately, these regions are increasingly experiencing the negative impacts of climate change, manifesting in more frequent drought episodes and shifts in climate patterns.

The consequences of climate extremes are particularly challenging for pastoralists in ASAL regions, compelling them to migrate in search of adequate pasture and water sources, often covering long distances. Reduced rainfall and higher temperatures further disrupt agricultural practices, affecting the community's food sources and pushing them towards dependency on relief food.

In response to these challenges, Husika Alliance is actively engaged in a Climate Action campaign, aiming to raise awareness among residents about the significance of environmental conservation and sustainable management. One key initiative within this campaign involves the reintroduction of indigenous acacia trees through the innovative concept of seed balls by our partner Seedballs Kenya.

The seed ball concept involves encapsulating tree seeds within a protective ball of soil, bio char, and other organic materials. These seed balls can be dispersed over large areas, promoting efficient and sustainable tree planting. By reintroducing indigenous acacia trees, we aim to restore the ecosystem and address the adverse impacts of climate change on the ASAL regions.

Tree planting, as a form of climate action, offers multiple benefits. It helps mitigate the effects of climate change by sequestering carbon dioxide, enhancing biodiversity, and regulating local climates. Moreover, the socio-economic advantages of tree planting extend to improved soil fertility, increased water retention, and enhanced resilience of crops, contributing to a sustainable future for the community.

Husika Alliance believes that through environmental conservation efforts like tree growing, we can build resilience, protect the environment, and create a sustainable foundation for the communities in ASAL regions. By combining climate action with community engagement, we strive to ensure a balanced and thriving environment for current and future generations.
